Re-Building personal skills for Longton ladies

21 March 2013

In the build up to this year's festival BCB is working with different local community groups and individuals to explore ways in which getting involved in ceramics can contribute towards health and wellbeing.  Re-Build is a new initiative that aims to develop confidence and raise levels of self-esteem in the members of the Ladies Self Support group (LASS).  Artist Ruth Spaak will work with the group to enable the ladies to develop their creative ideas and practical skills through the production of their own artworks in clay.

Ruth Spaak is a practicing artist who used a variety of materials to produce her work based on a process of breaking and re-making objects.  She is therefore well placed to understand the symbolic and practical aspects of the project.

The LASS ladies will be Re-Building sculptures with parts of recycled ceramic objects, some of which have been found on the former Spode site, including white ceramic flowers, cups and ornamental objects.  The project will run for 10 sessions starting in March and ends in June this year.
