Textured Terracotta

This collection of wheel-thrown terracotta vases explores the relationship between structured form and expressive surface. The natural warmth of terracotta, with contrasting colours drawn from the Moravian landscape of Amalia’s Czech heritage, complements the dynamic surface textures inspired by plaited forms. These tactile marks introduce asymmetry and rhythm, where fingerprints and the presence of touch create a dialogue between control and spontaneity.

Rooted in historical practice yet engaged with modern visual culture, the collection reinterprets slip decoration in a fresh, contemporary context. The vases move beyond function to express Amalia’s narratives and a renewed appreciation for terracotta in current ceramic practice by blending past and present.

See Amalia’s work, along with the rest of the University of Staffordshire MA Ceramics cohort, in Space F on the Spode Works Site from 6 September to 19 October 2025.
