Jo joined the BCB staff team in 2015, after returning to live and work in North Staffordshire. As Studio Programme Manager and Resident Artist, Jo has focused on developing a community of makers both in the studio at Spode Works and with community groups across Stoke-on-Trent. She is particularly committed to working with others in an open and collaborative way, responding to individuals’ interests and motivations. Jo has particularly enjoyed the opportunity to work on a programme of international exchange with artists in India.
Jo trained in Ceramics at the Royal College of Art and in Cardiff. She also has a PGCE in Art and Design. Her love of clay was encouraged by her experiences growing up in Stoke-on-Trent, and her first experiences of work at the Wedgwood Visitor Centre and Gladstone Pottery Museum. Her first encounter with BCB was in their inaugural year, when she exhibited as part of Fresh 2009.
Jo is working on a project connected with Staffordshire Flatbacks for this year’s festival. She will be on maternity leave during the festival so is looking forward to being a part of it as a visitor this time.
“As part of the Flatback project we are bringing together enthusiastic makers from across the city who are keen to develop their skills. They will receive expert tuition and guidance from ceramic professionals, before forming a production team making, by hand, a collection of contemporary Staffordshire Flatbacks for this year’s festival. A direct response to the fantastic collection of original flatback figurines held by the Potteries Museum and Art Gallery.”
