Matt Whiting

Matt Whiting is a ceramic artist, designer and maker whose practice explores the expressive potential of clay through the playful use of form, colour and illustration. Central to his work is a focus on storytelling and the human experience, often drawing on narrative and character to create accessible, engaging pieces that invite curiosity and connection. Matt’s approach to ceramics is rooted in hands-on making, with a particular emphasis on the tactile and communicative qualities of the medium. His practice also reflects a broader interest in contemporary craft and design.

Alongside his personal practice, he is currently undertaking a Master’s degree in Ceramics at the University of Staffordshire (2024–2026), based in the heart of the Potteries. The course supports the development of his critical and conceptual approach to ceramics. Since completing a BA in 3D Designer/Maker, specialising in ceramics, in 2023, Matt has worked as a studio manager and course tutor in Cheshire and Derbyshire, supporting learners of all levels in developing their material understanding and creative voice. Matt now works as a freelance ceramic artist and maker.
