Kiln Hire

BCB are delighted to be able to offer a new firing service to local ceramicists in Staffordshire and the surrounding areas. Our electric kiln can be hired in full, half or for individual pieces for firings at bisque, earthenware and stoneware temperatures. If a full kiln is being hired, specific temperatures can be accommodated for providing it is the correct firing temperature for your clay and glazes. Details about the service can be found below.

FAQ’s

How big is the kiln?

The biggest kiln is: 46cm x 68cm x 75cm or 18.1″ X 26.7″ X 29.5″ (width x depth x height)

 

What temperatures do you fire to?

We fire at 1000C, 1140 C, 1205 C and 1260 C. A different temperature can be accommodated for if a full kiln is booked and it is the correct temperature for your clay and glazes. Firing clay and glazes at unsuitable temperatures can ruin kiln elements, furniture and other people’s work. It is important to check the correct firing temperature for your clay and glazes, if you are not sure, please check the packaging and discuss with us first.

 

How much does it cost?

Full kiln: £80,

Half kiln: £40

or 45p per litre (measuring w x h x d of your piece in cm and divide by 1000)

 

How long will it take?

As we are currently only in the studio once a week, there is a minimum of one week turn around for work to be fired. This may be longer if there is not enough work to be fired at a specific temperature, as we tend to wait until the kiln is full to reduce environmental impact. If you’re working to a deadline we would recommend getting in touch with us first about hiring out a full kiln to ensure your deadline can be met.

 

How do I book the service?

Download and fill out our booking from then send to studio@britishceramicsbiennial.com. Once you’ve had your booking confirmed, you must pay for the service and choose your time slot to drop off your work. Payment details are below and time slots can be booked via Eventbrite.

 

My booking has been confirmed, how do I choose a time to drop off/collect my work?

Dropping off and collecting work takes place on a Monday afternoon between 1.30pm and 5.30pm. Book your time slot via our Eventbrite page.

 

When can I drop off or collect work for firing?

You can only drop off and collect your work on Mondays from 1.30pm to 5.30pm with a booked time slot.

How do I get to the BCB studio?

The entrance to the Spode car park is on Elenora Street, Stoke. There is a security office to the right of the car park. The security guard will see you arrive at the barrier and direct you to the studio – you can park near the studio doors.

 

How can I assure I can stay safe while dropping off work?

We have a table at the front of the studio door where you can drop off your work safely. There are gloves and hand sanitiser available also. The BCB staff continue to adhere to government guidelines as and when they change and develop. The safety of our staff, studio members and customers is important to us!

 

What happens if the work gets damaged in the kiln?

We take great care loading and handling everyone’s work, and making sure it is dry enough to be fired but inevitable damage may happen due to the delicate nature of ceramics. Work fired in a community kiln may also damage or be damaged by the work next to it. If you are particularly worried about this, it may be better to book a full kiln for yourself. We would not be liable for any compensation for damaged work.

 

What happens if my work damages the kiln or kiln furniture?

If work fired damages the kiln or kiln furniture, we may ask you to contribute to repair/ replacement within reason. It is important to check the correct firing temperature for your clay and glazes, if you are not sure, please check the packaging and discuss with us first.
