Award films 2025 – Alison Rees

Media category
Film

Award is the British Ceramics Biennial’s headline exhibition. It invites ten selected artists to tread new ground, use the momentum of the exhibition to focus or make a step change in their practice or to present work in ways it hasn’t previously been experienced.

About the Award films

Each film introduces the Award artists and shares how, where and why they make their work. Created by acclaimed filmmakers Lucy and Cameron of Elastic Pie Films, they reveal clay to be a rich material for storytelling, experimentation, playfulness, risk-taking and activism.

Alison Rees is part of the Award exhibition at Spode Works, open daily 10am-4pm from 6 September – 19 October 2025.

About the artist

With a background in archaeology and a PhD in ceramics, Dr Alison Rees tells abstract stories of person and place. She combines the materiality of clay with the language of the paper page.

For Award 2025, Alison will walk Britain’s most substantial green belt, the LOOP, and explore how layers of history, geology and activity accumulate over time to form a landscape. She will present an installation of 400 porcelain postcards, displayed in the round, to convey the idea of circularity and perimeter.
